What a body shape calculator measures+

A body shape calculator does not care about your dress size. It looks at the relationship between four measurements: your shoulders or bust, your waist, and your hips. Where the volume sits, and how defined your waist is against those numbers, is what decides your shape. Two women who both wear a size 12 can be a completely different shape, and that is exactly the point.

The math behind most serious calculators comes from the Female Figure Identification Technique (FFIT), developed at North Carolina State University by Simmons, Istook and Devarajan. They turned shape into ratios a computer can sort, comparing bust to hips, waist to hips, and waist to bust. That ratio logic is why a calculator can place you reproducibly instead of guessing. The five shapes most tools report, Hourglass, Pear, Apple, Rectangle and Inverted Triangle, are a simplified map of that system.

How to measure yourself correctly+

Use a soft tape, stand relaxed, and keep the tape level all the way around. Wear thin clothing or measure over underwear.

  1. Bust. Around the fullest part of your chest, tape level with the floor.
  2. Waist. Around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Do not suck in.
  3. Hips. Around the fullest part of your hips and seat, feet together.
  4. Shoulders. Optional but useful, across the widest point of your shoulders, to separate Inverted Triangle from the rest.

Then read the ratios the way FFIT does. If bust and hips are within roughly 5 percent of each other and your waist is clearly smaller (about 25 percent or more narrower than your hips), you read as Hourglass. If hips are noticeably larger than bust, you lean Pear. If bust is noticeably larger than hips, you lean Inverted Triangle. If bust, waist and hips are close together with little waist definition, you are a Rectangle. If your midsection is the fullest part and the waist is undefined, you read as Apple.

The five shapes, their markers and what flatters+
Body shape, defining ratio and what tends to flatter it
ShapeDefining markerWhat flatters
HourglassBust about equals hips, clearly defined narrow waistWrap dresses, belted pieces, fitted cuts that follow the waist. Let the natural balance show.
Pear (Triangle)Hips wider than shoulders and bustDetail up top, boat necks, structured shoulders, brighter tops with clean darker bottoms.
Apple (Oval)Fullness through the middle, little waist definitionVertical lines, V-necks, open necklines, flowy fabrics over the midsection, show legs.
Rectangle (Column)Shoulders, waist and hips fairly even, soft waistCreate curves: peplums, belts, ruffles, layering, anything that adds shape at the waist.
Inverted TriangleShoulders or bust wider than hipsVolume on the bottom: A-line skirts, wide-leg trousers, soften the shoulders with V-necks.
Common mistakes+
  • Measuring the wrong waist. Your natural waist is the narrowest point, not where your jeans sit. Measuring too low fakes a Rectangle.
  • Holding your breath. Sucking in distorts every ratio. Breathe normally.
  • Confusing weight with shape. Gaining or losing weight rarely changes your underlying frame ratios. A Pear stays a Pear across sizes.
  • Forcing yourself into Hourglass. It is the most flattered shape in marketing, but most women are not Hourglass, and dressing as if you are will not fit your real proportions.
  • Ignoring shoulders. Without a shoulder measurement, Inverted Triangle gets misread as Rectangle. Add it in.
Where the method comes from+

The ratio approach was formalized in 2004 by Simmons, Istook and Devarajan at the NC State College of Textiles, in the FFIT for Apparel papers. They sorted real body scans into nine shapes using fixed measurement ratios and reached roughly 90 percent agreement with human classification, which is why FFIT became the backbone of automated body shape tools. The simpler five-shape vocabulary most people know was popularized earlier by the fashion industry and by stylists like Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine, whose Body Shape Bible stretched the idea to twelve named types with specific outfit rules. A good calculator uses the FFIT ratio logic underneath and the friendly shape names on top.
