From feet and inches to centimeters
The conversion takes three steps:
- Multiply the feet by 12 to get inches.
- Add the extra inches.
- Multiply the total by 2.54. The result is centimeters.
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one foot is 12 inches. For a rough estimate in your head: an inch is a bit more than 2.5 cm, a foot is about 30 cm.

Going back takes two steps:
- Divide the centimeters by 2.54. The result is inches.

Decimal feet or inches
6'5 is not the same as 6.5 feet. A decimal is a fraction of a foot, so 6.5 feet would be six feet and six inches, written 6'6. The inch value counts twelfths of a foot instead.
The mark after the first number stands for feet, the mark after the second for inches.
