Why UK and US numbers differ
British and American numbering look alike but mean different things. For the same body the UK number usually sits 4 above the US number. UK 12 is US 8, UK 10 is US 6.
The European size sits above both. The rule of thumb for women's clothing is EU equals UK plus 28. UK 12 plus 28 gives EU 40.
Brands cut differently
The chart shows the standard conversion. How a garment actually sits depends on the brand. Some UK labels run small, and Italian brands are often cut closer than German ones.
