How to measure your foot
Measuring your foot length properly takes four steps:
- Measure in the evening. Feet get a little larger over the course of the day.
- Stand barefoot on a sheet of paper and trace your foot with the pen held upright.
- Measure from the heel to the longest toe.
- Measure both feet and use the longer one. Feet are rarely exactly the same.
Then pick the next foot length up in the chart. Do not add anything yourself, the allowance for movement is already in the assignment. If a brand is known to run small, go half a size up.
EU, UK and US compared
EU sizes count the last in Paris points, UK and US sizes count in inches and start from a different zero. That is why the numbers look so far apart while the shoe is the same length.
In the ISO assignment the US number is 2 above the UK number for women and 1 above for men. When in doubt, go by the foot length in cm, it is unambiguous.
